Think The Sound of Music, except exchange the hills, pretty people and endearing characters for gray cobblestone streets coated in the blood of (mostly) innocent murder victims.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street features a tremendous cast, amazing sets and cinematography, beautiful music and an engaging plot... about a vengeful serial killer. This plot is what might make some re-think going on an adventure with Sweeney. For those that do wish to embark on this journey though, this is what is in store.
The film, is horrendously dark. So much so that one must laugh, for their isn't really another way to take what the movie offers. The film is fundamentally a tragedy, a revenge movie, a musical and a ultra dark comedy all wrapped up with tinsel and string.
The blood in the film is artistically fake and not frequently let loose (until the end), but this doesn't mean it is any easier too watch, it's just more fun.
This is one of the better movies I've seen this year, but it's hard to recommend because of its pitch black heart that has Sweeney Todd shouting "Everyone deserves to die!"
